    This course provides a detailed overview of the pathophysiology of type 2 diabetes, prevention strategies, & cardiovascular risk reduction. In addition, we highlight type 2 treatment approaches including nutrition, activity, oral & injectable medications plus screening & treatment guidelines for micro & macrovascular diseases. Through case studies & discussion, we highlight strategies to focus on a person-centered approach along with attention to psychosocial care for people living with diabetes.

    Objectives:

    1. Discuss the current epidemiology of type 2 diabetes.
    2. Describe the classification, terminology & diagnostic criteria for diabetes.
    3. Identify the eight pathophysiologic defects associated with the ominous octet.
    4. Describe evidence and strategies to prevent type 2 diabetes.
    5. State strategies to implement a person-centered approach to those with diabetes.
    6. Discuss key aspects of type 2 diabetes management including education, therapeutic lifestyle changes, glucose, lipid, & hypertension management plus referrals.
    7. Understand the overarching principles of management of type 2 DM.

    Learning Outcome:

    Attendees will be able to articulate and integrate into practice, the impact, goals, and management strategies for people living with type 2 diabetes.


    Class 2: Cancer & Diabetes | 1.25 CEs

    Patients with cancer often experience hyperglycemia secondary to treatment, which can increase the risk of infection & compromise their nutritional status. In addition, recent research has identified the link between diabetes & cancer. Join us to learn more about this unexpected link & treatment strategies for steroid-induced hyperglycemia using a case study approach.

    Objectives:

    1. Discuss the relationship between cancer, hyperglycemia, & insulin resistance.
    2. State 3 benefits of normalizing glucose levels during chemotherapy.
    3. Using a case study approach, discuss strategies to improve glucose levels & quality of life.

    Learning Outcome:

    Participants will have an increased understanding of the relationship between hyperglycemia and cancer based on person-specific factors and will be able to discuss treatment approaches.


      Class 3: 3 Steps to DeFeet Amputation; Assess, Screen, & Report | 1.0 CEs

      Coach Beverly will walk participants through the 3-Step Process to Save Feet; Assess, Screen, & Report.  She will provide simple and clear instructions on how to assess and inspect feet, along with risk assessment & action steps. We will share free teaching tools, strategies, & documentation forms adapted from the Lower Extremity Prevention Program (LEAP) that you can immediately implement in your practice setting.

      Objectives:

      1. Describe steps involved in effective foot assessment made easy.
      2. Demonstrate how to use a monofilament to assess sensation.
      3. Discuss the use of screening forms to report findings.

      Learning Outcome:

      Diabetes team members will gain the skills and knowledge needed to provide a basic lower extremity assessment and provide individualized education to protect against lower extremity complications in diabetes.


          Class 4: Insulin Calculation Workshop | From Pumps & Beyond | 1.5 CEs 

          Determining basal & bolus rates for multiple daily injections or insulin pumps can seem overwhelming. This course provides participants with a step-by-step approach to determining basal rates, bolus ratios & how to problem-solve when blood glucose levels aren't on target. During this course, Coach Beverly provides abundant case studies to give participants hands-on practice & build confidence when calculating insulin doses for a variety of situations.

          Objectives:

          1. Describe using formulas to determine appropriate insulin dosing.
          2. Discuss strategies to determine & fine-tune basal insulin dose.
          3. Describe how to determine & fine-tune bolus rates including coverage for carbs & hyperglycemia.
          4. Using a case study approach, utilize calculations to determine the best insulin dosing strategy.

          Learning Outcome:

          Participants will have an increased knowledge of how to calculate bolus/basals insulin therapy based on person-specific factors and will be able to recommend insulin adjustments based on individual needs.


          Class 5: Solving Glucose Mysteries for Type 1 | 1.5 CEs 

          Why do the blood sugars keep dropping after meals? Is the basal insulin set correctly? What adjustments are needed for exercise?

          During this webinar Coach, Beverly addresses each of these glucose mysteries & more, using a person-centered approach.  She describes a stepwise approach to evaluate glucose patterns & correct common issues encountered by people living with type 1 diabetes.

          2. Using a stepwise approach, evaluate factors affecting glucose patterns.
          3. State interventions to increase time-in-range & improve quality of life.

          Class 7: Basal Bolus Therapy in Hospitals | 1.5 CEs

          Glucose control in the hospital matters! This course provides participants with a step-by-step approach to safely & effectively implement Basal-Bolus Insulin Therapy in the inpatient setting. We discuss appropriate insulin dosing based on the individual's clinical presentation & apply dosing strategies to a variety of case studies. Included are hard-to-manage situations that commonly occur in hospital settings & a discussion of solutions that will keep people living with diabetes safe & get glucose levels to goal. In addition, sample basal/bolus & insulin drip guidelines plus lots of resource articles are included.

          Objectives:

This session reviews how diabetes care & education specialists can provide screening, assessment, & trauma-informed care to individuals who experienced ACEs & are living with toxic stress. We will explore strategies to address ACES & improve outcomes for individuals & communities. Throughout, we will focus on supporting self-care with a focus on recognizing & promoting resilience.

            Objectives:

            1. Discuss the benefits of assessing Adverse Childhood Experiences (ACE) in individuals with diabetes.
            2. State the relationship between ACE Scores & the risk of future health complications.
            3. Describe a person-centered approach to fostering resilience & self-care for individuals with toxic stress.
