New: Level 5 | Assessing & Preventing Lower Extremity Ulcerations & Amputations | June 10th
Join us live on June 10, 2025, at 11:30 am PST to watch our brand new webinar, Assessing & Preventing Lower Extremity Ulcerations & Amputations by Dr. Mark Hinkes, DPM, DABFAS, FACFAS, FAPWCA
In this course, Dr. Mark Hinkes will describe the critical role of health care professionals and diabetes educators in the assessment of the lower extremities concerning diabetes foot ulcer and amputation prevention. He will outline the identification of risk factors for the development of diabetes foot ulcers and amputations and detail the steps involved in a comprehensive diabetes foot exam. Attendees will learn how to use international guidelines to stratify individuals into risk and screening categories combined with evidence-based medicine to prevent lower extremity complications.
Objectives:
- Perform a comprehensive diabetes foot exam that includes a vascular and neurological evaluation plus identification of bone, soft tissue, and nail deformities.
- Utilize the information from the exam as data to stratify individuals into internationally accepted risk groups and refer to members of the interdisciplinary team for risk mitigation.
- Identify when to re-screen individuals depending upon identified risks and risk categories and apply the guidelines of the International Working Group on the Diabetic Foot (IWGDF) to prevent "category creep" leading to diabetes foot ulcers and amputations.
- Describe how risk data may be used to nourish machine learning and artificial intelligence tools to provide predictive analytics leading to personalized medicine.
Learning Outcome:
Healthcare professionals will gain confidence in assessment, screening, and risk mitigation to prevent lower extremity complications in individuals living with diabetes.
Instructor:
Dr. Mark Hinkes, DPM, DABFAS, FACFAS, FAPWCA, is a Podiatrist who is Board certified by the American Board of Foot and Ankle Surgery, a Fellow of the American College of Foot and Ankle Surgery, and a Fellow of the American Professional Wound Care Association with 40+ years’ experience providing foot health care; 20 years in private practice and 20 years in the Veterans Affairs Medical System as former Chief of Podiatry Section and Chair of the Preservation Amputation Care Treatment (PACT) Program.
Dr. Hinkes' passion for excellence in the prevention of the comorbidities of diabetes led him to develop the ePrevenir platform, a cloud-served, machine learning driven, clinical decision support system designed to help predict and prevent the four co-morbidities of prediabetes and diabetes. The ePrevenir tool can be used in the primary care provider's office by ancillary staff to evaluate and manage the comorbidities of pre-diabetes and diabetes by five modules, one each for the feet, eyes, kidneys, and cardiovascular system and prediabetes.
Fee: $29.00
Earn 1.5 CEs
Accreditation: Diabetes Education Services is an approved provider by the California Board of Registered Nursing, Provider 12640, and this course awards listed CPEUs in accordance with the Commission on Dietetic Registration’s CPEU Prior Approval Program.
The use of DES products does not guarantee the successful passage of the certification exam. CBDCE and ADCES do not endorse any preparatory or review materials for the CDCES or BC-ADM exams, except for those published by CBDCE & ADCES.

Taking the CDCES Exam?
Our CEs count toward the 15 CE requirements to sit for the exam! When applying to take the exam with the Certification Board for Diabetes Care & Education (CBDCE) you'll just need to select "CDR" or "Commission on Dietetic Registration" for your CE hours source.*
Renewing Your CDCES or BC-ADM certification?
Our CEs count towards the 75 CEs needed to renew your CDCES or BC-ADM for our courses/programs that have received Prior Approval through the CDR.*
Are you an RD or RN?
Our CEs count for RDs in all states, and in most states for RNs because of reciprocity agreements. Check with your state Licensing Board to see if there is a reciprocity agreement with California's BRN. RDs and RNs in California can use our CEs towards their professional hours continuing education requirement.
Are you a Pharmacist or Other Health Care Professional?
Pharmacists in California can count our CEs towards their professional hours continuing education requirement because of a reciprocity agreement between the California BRN and the California Board of Pharmacists. Pharmacists and other health care professionals in other states should check with their state Licensing Board to see if there is a reciprocity agreement with California's BRN or the CDR.
Since we are not directly an approved provider through the NABP, Pharmacists need to self-report their CE hours.
*Most programs and courses have Prior Approval from the CDR. Any course or webinar listed without CEs/CPEUs will not have Prior Approval and cannot count towards RD, CDCES, or BC-ADM CE/CPEU requirements.
The use of DES products does not guarantee the successful passage of the certification exam. CBDCE and ADCES do not endorse any preparatory or review materials for the CDCES or BC-ADM exams, except for those published by CBDCE & ADCES.
In each course, our instructors highlight the critical content of each topic area so you can focus your study time most efficiently. They also launch multiple poll questions that highlight key concepts to help students assess their knowledge and learn the best test-taking strategies.
